Infection Control & Prevention

Information and Guidelines taken from

Effective infection prevention and control practices can reduce the risk of transmission between patients, clients, workers and others in healthcare, beauty and office environments.

Infectious agents transmitted during the provision of face-to-face services (such as healthcare & beauty procedures). These come primarily from human sources, including patients, clinicians and visitors. Successful infection control measures involve implementing work practices that prevent the transmission of infectious agents using a two-tiered approach:

  • Standard precautions
  • Transmission-based precautions

Standard precautions are basic infection prevention and control strategies that apply to everyone, regardless of their perceived or confirmed infectious status. Strategies include hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, cleaning, and appropriate handling and disposal of sharps. These are a first-line approach to infection prevention and control in health service organisations, but can be routinely applied as an essential strategy for minimising the spread of infections in any environment or workplace. Standard precautions minimise the risk of transmission of infectious agents from one person or place to another, even in high-risk situations, and render and maintain objects and areas as free as possible from infectious agents.1

Transmission-based precautions are specific interventions to interrupt the mode of transmission of infectious agents. They are used to control infection risk with patients or clients who are suspected or confirmed to be infected. Transmission-based precautions are recommended as extra work practices in situations when standard precautions alone may be insufficient to prevent transmission. Transmission-based precautions are also used during outbreaks to help contain and prevent further infection.

Common Infection Control & Prevention standards include:

Hand Hygiene

Hand hygiene is the leading measure for preventing the spread of antimicrobial resistance and reducing healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). With employees and workers’ hands being the most common cause for transmission of pathogens, it is important to practice effective hand hygiene rituals.

In turn, this also extends beyond the healthcare environment, to include beauty salons/parlours, tattoo and piercing studios, massage centres, skin clinics and other environments where face-to-face client work is carried out.

Livingstone has a wide range of hand hygiene products to effectively cleans your hands without drying out your skin.

Our hand sanitisers are one of the strongest in the market, containing 75% Ethanol Ethyl Alcohol. Our wide range of hand washes are enhanced with antibacterial properties and moisturisers to keep your hands soft and hydrated.

Waste Management

Failure to develop concrete policies for the handling of medical and infectious waste can lead to disastrous consequences. Ignoring the importance of waste management makes a facility or salon more dangerous for its current patients/clients and sets in motion a cycle of infection outside of its walls.

As much, make sure when handling medical and infectious waste that you use the correct products. This will prevent the likelihood of an infectious outbreak.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to protective clothing such as helmets, gloves, face shields, goggles, face masks and/or respirators. This equipment designed to protect the wearer from the spread of infection or illness.

When used properly, PPE acts as a barrier between infectious materials and your skin, mouth, nose or eyes (mucous membranes). The barrier has the potential to block transmission of contaminants from blood, body fluids or respiratory secretions.

Disinfection is a process that reduces the number of micro-organisms to a level at which they do not present a risk to patients or clients.

Usually, the process of disinfecting involves the need to clean the surface prior to disinfecting. Cleaning means physically removing germs, dirt and organic matter from surfaces. Disinfecting means using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. It’s important to clean before disinfecting because organic matter and dirt can reduce the ability of disinfectants to kill germs.

As a result, Livingstone developed a range of sanitisation products and cleaning products that have gone through strict and rigorous examination by third party companies and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to ensure our products conform to Australian standards.

These products include:
