Eco-Conscious Procurement in a plastic-driven healthcare

,
Livingstone and world environment initiatives

In Australia, our healthcare system heavily leans on single-use, disposable items to assist in reducing infection and improving cleanliness. Historically, plastic has been the go-to due to its versatility and economic benefits.

However, as awareness of climate change’s impact on our environment grows, so does concern over plastic’s role in it. Thankfully, technological progress has led to the development of eco-conscious alternatives like sugarcane or cardboard pulp. These innovations offer promising solutions to mitigate the environmental impact of healthcare practices whilst retaining infection control practices.

Eco-Conscious initiatives

Livingstone aims to become carbon-neutral by the end of 2024. To achieve this goal, we have been implementing numerous initiatives since 2019. Our offices and warehouses have adopted energy-efficient practices, significantly reducing paper and packaging usage. As a result, we have obtained ISO 14001 certification, an international standard that denotes effective environmental management systems within workplaces. We aim to convert 80% of our products and packaging into ecologically sustainable solutions.

We are well on our way to achieving this target since introducing our LivEco range, which offers a wide range of compostable or biodegradable alternatives. By embracing sustainable practices across our operations, we are actively working towards minimising our carbon footprint and contributing to a greener future. Our commitment to environmental responsibility is one of our core values that drives our efforts to continuously improve and innovate.

Compostable Features

Reducing carbon footprint and minimising plastic presence in our ecosystem are crucial steps toward environmental sustainability. When compostable materials break down into nutrient-rich components, enriching soil health. Compostable materials promote long-term ecological balance by reducing the reliance on finite resources. Furthermore, the decomposition of these materials significantly diminishes pollution levels in the environment, contributing to a cleaner and healthier planet overall.

Biodegradable Features

Decomposition plays a crucial role in reducing environmental pollution by breaking down waste materials. Biodegradable products leave behind trace elements that are less harmful and more easily assimilated into the environment.

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)™️

Livingstone has worked hard to ensure that a collection from our eco-conscious range is now Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)™️  certified. FSC is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. This is achieved through the preservation and management of the communities, ecosystems, and flora and fauna.

These standards ensure that biodiversity is maintained during the farming of raw materials. Products sourced from FSC-certified forests offer many environmental and social benefits. Firstly, these products come from forests managed sustainably, ensuring that ecosystems are protected, biodiversity is preserved, and carbon isolation is maximised.

By choosing FSC-certified items, consumers contribute to the conservation of forests worldwide, helping combat deforestation and its associated environmental impacts. Moreover, FSC certification promotes responsible forestry practices, which often translate into improved livelihoods for local communities and indigenous peoples dependent on forest resources. Additionally, FSC certification provides assurance that products are sourced ethically, adhering to stringent criteria for fair labour practices and Indigenous peoples’ rights. Opting for FSC-certified products aligns with a commitment to sustainability and supports the long-term health of both forests and the communities that depend on them.
